1- My impression of today's In-Service is that Ms. Bryant did an excellent job of providing the necessary overview of special needs.
2- Three specific things I learned today about my legal responsiblities to special needs student are 1) as a classroom teacher I am legally responsible for implementation of IEP's; 2) under Miriam's Pyramid of Laws, IEP's and 504 Plans are directly under the Constitution; and 3)if I an unable to attend an IEP meeting, I must complete a written report on the student before the meeting.
3- On future In-Services I would like the topics of assessing and grading special needs students in the shop/related setting to be addressed and designing UDL curriculum.
Information about 504's and IEP's was useful to instructional staff. A large portion of the inservice seemed to be geared toward special ed professionals.
Today's in-service was very insightful and useful in future special education meetings and conferences.
I think we need to evaluate topics and time usage on in-services. We need more time for our own programs.
Today's session was informative and helpful. I think it could have been as effective, however, in a one-hour time period. Getting together in small groups for some question/answer sessions might also be a good idea. Thanks to the presenter....liked the music!!
Would have liked a better speaker.
The program was very informative and pertinent.
Very informative. Learned a lot.
Ms. Bryant is obviously knowledgeable of the material. However, there was so much covered that I think people started to "zone out." At least that is what I saw going on around me.
Very informative.
Inspiring. Thank you.
1.The presenter was very informative. She tried hard to energize a difficult presentation.
2. a. The difference between an IEP and a Section 504
b. What "discrimination" means according to persons with disabilities.
c. The difference between an accomodation and a modification.
It is a good reminder of liability
It was a review of what we should already know
I did not learn anything new
Practical teaching strategies related to common accommodations
With the ever changing laws in Special Education, now more than ever no child will be left behind.
good
Good information about the 504 and IEP.
1. Ifound todays in service very informative.
2.
3.
I thought that it was somewhat interesting. I feel that a lot of the information that was given was already known. I feel it would of been more beneficial on how to review these IEP's and 504's and how to implement them into our own technical/academic areas
todays inservice was useful and educational. I was not aware of the difference between 504's and IEP's. The music was good too.
1 It was interesting, but very confusing;
2 Three specific things I learned today are that a. I am very responsible for implementing IEPS; b. I attended meetings, but sometimes do not feel part of the "team" decision which we learned today is a team decision c. more detailed explanation of 504.
3. Future inservice someone from industry related shop to come in and doing a presentation; future decisions regarding attendance reviews
Today's inservice wass very informative. It is difficult, however, to sit in the lecture hall for that length of time. The information was useful and the stress on the importance of the law was good.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and kudos to the IMC staff for producing such a fine piece.
I found the inservice informative and that it provided a thorough overview of such an important topic that affects us all.
I thought Rebecca was excellent.
I learned the difference between a modification and an accomadation.
I also learned that a general ed teacher has to be present an an IEP meeting, and, that ADHD does not neccessarily make one elidgible for a 504 Plan.
1. very interesting
2. a. teacher responsibility
b. explanation of 504
c. explanation of IEP
3. explanation of major developments in school ie. discipline, attendance.
this wouls have been more useful if it had been geared towards the teacher rather than the sped preofessionals
The in-service was somewhat interesting. However, it was way too long in the talking end and I felt there should have been some case studies on the areas of IEPs and 504s. I am not that familiar with these accomodations and only follow directions from the SPED department as required.
ms. bryant was very knowledgable and did a good job.the material was dry and she made an effort to keep things interresting.
This In-Service was a little dry although very informative.
There are many things that I was not aware of in terms of legal regulations in Special Education. I know that we need to attend meetings on students with IEP's and 504's. All teachers should have input into the process.
I'd like to learn more strategies and teaching techniques to be used in the classroom.
It was ok little long.Made some of the fact clear.
It is useful to be aware of a classroom teacher's legal responsibilities regarding 504s and IEPs.
1) Two hour long sessions were a little tough to sit through with such a heavy subject. Although the information is very important to understand.
2) 1-you absolutely must give the student the accommodations in the 504. 2-I liked the Dr's comment on 252's. 3-Discrimination is not entirely illegal.
3)I don't believe the question of what the difference between a 504 and IEP was NOT actually answered.
4)Your Welcome
I think Ms. Bryant was very Knowledgeable and informative. It will take awhile to digest it all. I also enjoyed the music. We do need to have time to spend on our own programs however.
The subject matter and content was very interesting but a little overwhelming due to the amount covered. A bit of information overload was reached.
I thought Ms.Bryant provided a great overview of the IEP, 504 madates. She was concise and well informed.
I agree here...
Information about 504's and IEP's was useful to instructional staff. A large portion of the inservice seemed to be geared toward special ed professionals.Three specific things I learned today 1) I am legally responsible for implementation of IEP's; 2 IEP's and 504 Plans are directly under the Constitution; and 3)if I an unable to attend an IEP meeting, I must complete a written report on the student before the meeting.
NEXT
Let's tackle our attendance policy (I'm sorry to hear that our policy has fallen apart-let's stick to the plan)
and discipline policy..it's time to reflect on what worked and what didn't as we prepare for next year.
1. good information/tough presentation
2. Difference between accomadation and modification. Most situations are "it depends."
My impresion of today's in-service was informative.
The three specific things I learned today are, 504 plan,Idea, and adaptations.
Hard to follow. Very long!!!!
1over my head
2same
3decoding skills
The presentation today was very well done, with an engaging speaker. Having been through the process of developing an IEP and a 504 (on the parental side), the only thing that I learned about was the specifics of pertinent case law. I am unable to think of specific topics that I would like to see addressed, but it is my feeling that small group work among teachers would be an effective way to address some of the issues that were presented by Atty. Bryant.
It was a very informative session. I am still a little confused over the difference between 504 and IDEA.
I liked the music
THE WOMAN SEEMED TO KNOW WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT. SHE WAS KIND OF DRY. I FEEL WE NEEDED TO KNOW THIS INFO BUT SHE WAS TOUGH TO LISTEN TO. IF YOU ALREADY HAD SOME PRIOR INFO IT MAY HAVED HELPED. MAYBE WE COULD READ THE PRESENTATION THE DAY BEFORE? LEGALLY I WILL ASK FOR HELP AND WILL NOT TRY TO PRETEND TO KNOW ALL THE RULES.
Mrs. Bryant provided alot of information on IEPs and 504 law. It waas very helpful.
Three things I learned:
IEP is a legal document.
As an educator I am legally responsible to implement IEP.
If I do not agree with IEP it is my responsibility to request a meeting with the team.
It would be helpful to discuss this information in smaller groups. There was a lot of information to digest.
It's nice to know for what teachers are legally liable regarding 504s and IEPs.
Inservice was informative and useful for all instructors attending special ed meetings and/or teaching students with IEP or 504 plans.
Today's inservice was informative. and very detailed. Obviously the presenter knows her subject. I did learn new information. However, the format of lecture was a bit tedious. Small group discussions work best and help keep the audience zoned in.
1. Mrs. Bryant was very informative. I think that distinguishing between IEP's and 504's was the most helpful.
2. I learned that i have to follow the IEP very carefully. Also that it is very important to communicate with parents at meetings and be specific. There are definite liability issues that i need to be aware of.
3. Maybe how to implement what is on the IEP in different classroom situations.
It was an informative In-service...a lot of information.
I didn't learn anything new today.
There was a lot of valuble information in the presentation. It was good to be reminded of our legal responsibilites as educators. I would like to see people share ideas, strategies, projects, etc. from their own teaching experiences in future in-service days.
The presentation was informative however it was very difficult to stay focused on the speaker. The music was some help. I learned that regular education teacher need to attend IEP meetings. We are responsible for following the requirements of the IEP.
1. Informative. Info provided in a clear and concise manner.
2. a.The difference between an IEP and a 504 Plan
b.Our responsibilities as general ed teachers to understand and follow the mandates of the IEP and 504 Plan.
c. Our role in helping a student obtain a 504 or IEP.
3. Workshops on implementing accomondations in the classroom.
I thought the speaker did a good job presenting the material.
I thought the speaker was very knowledgeable and tried to keep the presentation active. I would have liked an opportunity to then discuss some of what she said wiht the special ed dept to clarify some of the topics presented verses the way it feels like we opporate here at GLTech.
Nice to know,i have several students with 504s. the differnce between accomadation and modification
Ms. Bryant was well informed but it was hard to concentrate because it was too long. I know that I am legally responsible for implementation of the IEPs. I have to talk over any changes with the Team first. There are a lot of "It Depends". As for future In-Services, I wish that there could be time to honestly talk about problems in the school.
I found Ms. Bryant's presentation very infomrative. I particularily found the clarification of some of the language generalizations such as accomodation and modification helpful. Also, the distinction between 504 plans and IEP also cleared some confusion for me. Overall, She did a good job of stating, in general terms, what the school's, and the teacher's, resposiblitiies are. Finally, She did a good job of outlining individual responsibilities of the regular education teachers.
Today's speaker obviously was able to express her knowledge through a keen application of the skills learned in loquacious presentation.
I think Ms.Brynat presented a good overview of the topic.
I was impressed by Ms. Bryants's knowledge of law in special education. I learned that you must follow all accommodations and that 504's and IEP fall under federal law.
My impression of today's in-service is that Ms. Bryant gave a well thought-out informative presentation of special needs requirements.
2. Three things I have learned:
a) If a team can not come to a concensus, a district represenative makes the decision.
b) That there are requirements to show how a student will transition from the IEP before graduation.
c)The meaning of FAPE.
3. In the future I would like more information about when to refer a student for an evaluation and how to go about it.
Informative. Does O'Conner have a radio talk show?
Overall it seemed a little long
Not following an IEP can be prosecuted by law
IEP and section 504 are very different
Many new laws have been incorporated since 1954
How children can be held accountable in the lower grades so they do not come to high school on permanent vacation.
I found the presentation to be extremely educational. It is always stressful dealing with Special Education students and making sure that you are providing all of the needs to help them succeed. Today, I learned the difference between accomodations and modifications, and how to implement them within the classroom. I also learned the fundamental ideas/concepts behind special education laws. Overall, I found the in-service to be educational and essential for all educators.
Mrs. Bryant gave us a great overview of the laws regarding Special Education and our responsibilities as educators.
Althoough the topic is very dry she did her best to keep our interest.
I was aware of most of the laws but it was a good review.
thankyou
Ms Bryant did her best with what is a very dry subject. She is certainly knowledgeable in this area. The music helped to break things up. Hopefully the message got out that all instructors need to be part of the team.
I think Ms. Bryant attempted to take a very dry subject and make it interesting. A difficult job. Using a few more personal teacher examples would have helped. The songs were good though.
I must follow the IEP regardless wheither or not I think it is useful.
The difference between modification and accomodation.
IEP mmeting can run without the parent but it isn't a good practice.
I would like inservices with more engaging topics and or speakers.
1. The speaker was very knowledgable about the subject matter, but her explanations were not always clear.
2. Three things Ilearned: 1) a student can be making effective progress academically but still qualify for an IEP due to lack of social/emotional growth. 2)District member can make a decision even when there is disagreement about an ed plan
3)The meaning of "substanially limit" a major life activity
I found it interesting to realize how much weight a teacher's opinion can hold in developing an ed plan. I also was glad to be informed on the cautions of making promises during in ed plan's.
Thank you to Ms. Bryant for a job well-done. I learned how important it is to be at the meetings for our special needs students. I was also surprised that I, as a teacher can be held personally responsible for not implementing the accommodations of the IEP.
Even though I generally find the law boring, Mrs Bryant livened the presentation with the lively music and powerpoint presentation.
Three specific things I learned are the difference between 504's and IEP's, transitional services and the role they'll play now and even more so in the future, and finally the difference between accommodation and modifications.
A future inservice should present
grading of students on an IEP and or 504 ( out of school because of an illness) in technical areas.
1) I thought it was very informative.
2) The three things I learned today: the difference between 504 and IEP. A parent does not have to be there for a 504 meeting( it depends). In order for a teacher to provide accommendation for a student that must be on a 504 plan.
3)I would like to see more details on what is considered substantial enough for a 504.
thanks!
Today's in-service was presented very well. I learned about the evolution of Section 504 and IDEA. It reinforced the concept of "TEAM" participation. I also learned the difference between modifications and accomodations. I would also like to learn more about how to attain industry standard practices in the shop setting while not compromising a student's 504 Plan or IEP.
I thought today's presentation was insightful. I learned the difference between a 504 Plan and an IEP; the difference between accomodation and modification; and the importance of participating in meetings. Furure In-services should include new/improved teaching stratigies for Special Education students in 'regular ed' classes.
Thanks.
1.)It was informative but at the same time a little boring. It was too much lecture and not interactive at all. I like the inservices that are more interactive, I seem to learn better that way.
2.)--Even students with high grades are eligible.
--Difference between modifications and accomomdations.
--The district representative can make the final decision if one is not reached among the team.
3.)I am not sure at this time.
1. My overall impression of today's in-service was that there is a lot of information regarding IEPs and 504 plans.
2. Three specific things I learned today:
a. Even students with high grades are eligible for special services if there is a social impairment.
b. The difference between modifications and accommodations.
c. The district rep can make the final recommendation if the IEP team doesn't agree.
3. I think today's in-service did the job.
Ms. Bryant was well informed, thought the topic is rather dry to say the least. I learned that the teacher is legally and personally responsible to implement the IEP. I believe I understand a little more clearly the distinction between accommodation and modification. I'm not clear on how the accommodations in the IEP are arrived at in the first place. Ms. Bryant suggested that the school does not have to put in every accommodation that the parent requests or that the student requests. I hope that the school is "discriminating" in the good sense, in deciding what the IEP should contain. Some accommodations that I've seen, such as "Do not call on this student in class" appear to me to be counterproductive and negatively enabling.
The presentation was outstanding. The presenter knew the material and was able to present it in an entertaining manner without being condescending. The information on 504 plans and IEPs was helpful and it certainly gave me a greater appreciation for the job that our Special Needs teachers, staff, and administrator are doing.
overall impression: useful information especially for regular ed teachers perhaps; very familiar to special ed teachers. presentation was ok, just hard for some of us to sit for long.
1- We felt that much of the information that was covered we had prior knowledge from past special education in-services.
2. 1)We learned that is not an automatic IEP diagnosis.
2)We learned that under certain circumstance meetings can be held without the parents.
3)We focus more on accomodations than on modifications of students needs.
3) To learn about teaching strategies that will encourage development of our special needs students and get them ready for general curriculum based studies.
Attorney Bryant was factual about how students are placed on IEP's and 504 plans. She may have wanted to incorporated actual cases about litigated cases where students cannot be denied services and what medical documentation is required or mandates the school to accept educational diagnosis.
Many facts are already known about IEP plans, but more information could be learned about 504 plans.
Next stop should be on different methods of assessing student with plans in our school. What special modifications should teachers consider?
Perhaps Jill Davis would be an appropriate professional to give the next inhouse service.
1.The presenter was very informative.
2.I learned what discrimination meant realted to the laws specific to people with disabilities.
The distinction between accommodations and modifications is clearer.
I also have a clearer definition of substantial impairment of major aspects of life.
If a school has an attendance policy. IF attendance is the most important prerequisite for an education. Then how do modifications to such a policy benefit the student. Because the state does not allow modifictions to the standards for M.C.A.S. are we truly meeting the needs of the students by allowing them
1 - My impression of today's In-Seervice was that it provided a very thorough overview of special education mandates.
2 - Three specific things I learned today were the importance of attending special education meetings, that I can be held liable for not following IEP/504s, and there is no specific formula for who/what is included under which plan. There are many grey areas.
3 - On future In-Service dates I would like to learn how other teachers are utilizing the new discipline plan - what works for them, what doesn't work, etc.
1. Imformative, but all over the map. She did a good job, but there was way too much info for 1 meeting.
2. - Three specific things I learned today about my legal responsiblities to special needs student are 1) as a classroom teacher I am legally responsible for implementation of IEP's; 2) under Miriam's Pyramid of Laws, IEP's and 504 Plans are directly under the Constitution; and 3)if I an unable to attend an IEP meeting, I must complete a written report on the student before the meeting.
3. Maybe something on assessment in the shop setting, such as with autistic students.
The speaker did a fine job explaining the history of special education.
The workshop reinforces the importance of attending team meetings.
I learned that students who are hyper-active or have emotional problems should not necessarily require special accomodations.
The workshop also reinforced the special need of my students who have Autism. They may be getting an "A" in class, but their "social and emotional development" is impeded because of their disability.
I would like future In-Service workshops to cover specific strategies for testing students with special needs.
Impression: favorable; handout always a good backup and spot for notes. VERY hard spot for the presenter.
Learned: Reinforced my job to notice the needs of everyone in class; my culpability; There are both IEPs and 504s.
Future: Practical teaching and accommodation strategies.
Impression: favorable; handout always a good backup and spot for notes. VERY hard spot for the presenter.
Learned: Reinforced my job to notice the needs of everyone in class; my culpability; There are both IEPs and 504s.
Future: Practical teaching and accommodation strategies.
I thought that the in-service was very educational and I learned quite a bit about the laws of special educations. Many of the points she made were new to me, but some of the issues were familiar, and it was a nice review.
Today I learned the difference between accommedations and modifications. I also learned that. I also learned how to implememnt strategies in the classroom. I find it easier to implement these accomedations all the time with every student, rather then just those who have them included in their IEP.
I felt that the speaker covered so much. I would like it broken down so that it is more clear. I would also like group generated activites to break up the day.
Thank you
I positively have a better understanding of the 504 Plan. Ms. Bryant was very knowledgebale of the subject matter. The "tunes" were pretty good also!
1)I think she could have been clearer on some of the issues.
2) Up to me to bring up appropriate accomodations for considerations in team meetings.
I can be held persanally liable for not updolding IEP accomodations.
My job is to provide students with a FAPE.
The presentation could have been conducted for 1 hour during two separate in-services(if that is all possible.) Too much time sitting in one place.
I enjoyed the presentation. It was a review of valuable information that we all should be aware of!!! I think it's important for special ed and non special ed teachers to realize that not following a 504 plan has significant consequences. I appreciate the speaker's efforts of spicing up the presentation with music...
Ms. Bryant did a great job explaining both special ed and general ed laws. As I sat there, I could not help but to think about the many changes that we are making, and what seems to me to be our effort to make what we do right with attendance and discipline. I realized today, and I guess that I knew this before, how important it is to fill out paper work, read plans and attend meetings. I would like to see us spend a bit more time sharing strategies; I know that we have DCAP, that some of us use to accommodate special ed students.
1] OK 2] IEP, 504, TEAM MEETING 3]
1. Very informative, well presented
2. My legal resposibilities, classroom accomadations and meeting requirements.
3. Teaching strategies
Attorney Bryant was informative but my overall impression was her presentation was too passive and too long. As an educator, I learned the following 1. The difference between accommodations and modifications. 2. What a 504 plan is. 3. Alot of things just "depend". In the future, I would prefer to hear from the people in the Special Ed Department within our school explain policy.
Very well done
Accomodations,Modifications and Genuine Concern
What are the signs of a Special Needs student, Teacher input and responsibility
Much Information. "Talk to your Doctor if you think it's right for you"
Today's inservice was a good review of our responsibilities regarding Section 504 and IDEA.
Although I generally understand our legal responsibilities, I was surprised to learn that a Physician's diagnosis does not alway result in a 504 Accommodation Plan.
I would like to see eligibility criteria pertaining to students with "Serious Emotional Disturbance".
Thank you.
I thought the In-service was a good refresher as to what All faculty shoud be aware of.The break down between the 504 and the IEP was informative. It's good to know with all the laws involved there is an ocassion when our hand would be tide no matter what!I think the In-services are getting better.
1. The meeting was informative for me...the speaker was nice and tried to make it enjoyable
2. Being new to teaching with certain frameworks I learned about reliabilty and validity in relation to adaptation; 3 keys to identifying discrimination and specifics of eligibility under IDEA to include SED, Autism etc..
3. In the future i would like to have situations presented to us where we can discuss in groups how to resolve or work through them..ie: sitting thru a 504 meeting, meeting a student recommendation in class...
This is great info to know.
